Dear Islander Families,
It has been exciting week for performances and athletic pursuits, as our CoSA students showcase their talents in digital arts, musical theatre, and dance, and our athletes in spring sports continue their successes in CIF playoffs!
Our 11th grade students wrapped up state testing in math and English and seniors piloted a science assessment this week--thank you, students, for your efforts to demonstrate your achievement and represent our school, and to our staff who coordinated and proctored tests.
In an ongoing effort to extend learning beyond the classroom and provide valuable experiences to our students, teachers are accompanying our students on various field trips next week. On Monday our sophomores will tour the Museum of Tolerance and UCLA, with generous support from the Chabad of Coronado, the Langerman Family Foundation, Coronado Schools Foundation, and our students’ families. Seniors will visit the courthouse on Tuesday and Wednesday for a program that orients them to the justice system and provides opportunities to sit in on trials in session.
We are excited to announce the return of this year’s CHALK WALK at Coronado High School. The kid-friendly festival includes live student artists working on their large scale chalk art pieces, an interactive area where everyone can create their very own chalk art, and a full day of fun in the sun for ALL AGES to enjoy! Come celebrate with our vibrant community on Thursday, May 25 on the CHS Quad. Gates open to the public at 10:30 am and will be closing at 4:30 pm; guests must check in at the office upon arrival. Invite your friends and family!
Thank you to the Lamb’s Players Theatre and Kerry Meads, Associate Artistic Director, for offering our physics students a free opportunity to attend the play Silent Sky this week. The play tells the story of Henrietta Swan Leavitt and women of the Harvard Observatory, who contributed to our understanding of the universe through their discoveries in astronomy.
Graduating seniors and their families: Please find information about our senior class events at this link: http://chs.coronadousd.net/news/senior-activities-calendar/. In this week’s letter, and as we approach graduation, we would like to recognize families and individuals who have helped fellow Islanders’ on their journeys at CHS: hosting students whose parents have transferred with the military; providing carpools, meals, and places to stay for students who commute from various parts of the county; serving as mentors, caregivers, and guardians to students as if they were your own. The Coronado High School Islander community embodies the saying, “it takes a village,” and we are grateful for the villagers!
Summer School: CHS will be offering a limited summer school program for students in need of remediating failing grades to meet graduation requirements, with priority given to graduating seniors and rising 12th graders. Families with students encouraged to take summer school will be contacted by counselors. Summer School runs from June 18 through July 28 with mandatory attendance.
FOR ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF STUDENTS RETURNING to CHS IN THE FALL: The registration process this summer will require you to have an active Synergy ParentVUE login ( If you have ever used Synergy to access your student’s attendance or report card information, you DO NOT NEED an activation code). You will not be able to register your student without having an activated Synergy ParentVUE. Please see the school front office to pick up your Synergy parent account activation. You will be asked to present a picture ID to pick up your parent activation.
