Campus Lunch Policy
Dear Students and Families,
CHS has a closed lunch period for freshmen (9th grade students) and open campus for 10th-12th graders. Our policy’s philosophy is similar to colleges where freshmen are required to live on campus for their first year: we believe there are benefits to students when they are accessible to their peers in their grade level as well as to teachers and supportive leaders and counselors. Most of our campus clubs meet during lunch (Club Week is coming soon; more information to follow), our library is open, and several teachers open their classrooms at lunch for homework help and lesson review. We appreciate support from families in reinforcing our expectations for freshmen to enjoy lunch on campus with peers. Freshmen who leave campus at lunch will be assigned lunch detention.
We are a unique high school centrally located in the heart of our small city. Tenth through twelfth graders are welcome to leave campus for lunch but are advised to do so with responsibility and accountability for being back to school on time and walking, biking, and driving safely in the community. We recommend you encourage your students NOT to leave the island at lunch. Assistant Principal Tim Hopper has been meeting daily with students arriving late from lunch to remind them of expectations, and will assign lunch detention to students with multiple tardies. Our local businesses are supportive of our student body and speak highly of their manners and interactions in the community. We remind our students to represent Islander ideals by greeting community members with respect and throwing away lunch waste and picking up trash.
Our Cafeteria is open for breakfast thirty minutes prior to school each day, and we serve hot items and snacks during our daily mid-morning nutrition break. Our lunch menu includes hot meals as well as a fresh salad bar. Please visit our district website to enroll your child in a meal charge program, or sign up for free/reduced lunch: http://coronadousd.net/departments/food-services-student-nutrition/
