Islander Family Email - 1/17/18

January 16, 2018

Welcome to Spring Semester, Islander Families!  First semester grades will be visible on Synergy and mailed home on Friday, January 19.

Spring Semester is an opportunity for a fresh and renewed focus on attendance, effort, and achievement.  It is also a semester in which some of our students will take state tests in math and language arts and AP exams, choose courses for their next year of high school, commit to colleges, and graduate!  Our staff will be working hard to support students’ achievements this year and their plans for next year.

Counselors’ Corner:

Please join us on Wednesday (TONIGHT!), January 17th at 6:30pm in the CHS Theater to review your student’s PSAT scores and discuss college planning, academic advising, and more with the CHS Counselors:

Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) Reminders

Pre-deployment, deployment, separation, and reunification can be especially stressful times for our military families. Students sometimes exhibit academic performance, social or behavioral changes during such times. While CHS is aware of several current deployments, with the most recent being the USS Carl Vinson and her battle group, we rely on our families to communicate with us when deployment and reunification is occurring for their family.  Such information can be very helpful. Continued communication with CHS administrators, teachers, and MFLC is encouraged so that we can provide the best support to our students during these transitions.

Join us at Coronado High School on Thursday, February 1st from 6:00-7:30pm for the Post 9/11 GI Bill Presentation.  Come learn about the Post 9/11 GI Bill and educational resources available to military members and their dependents. The Department of Veterans Affairs, Military Services Outreach Coordinator, will provide the presentation and be available to answer questions. The presentation will be held in the Multipurpose Room.

Please remember we have a Child and Youth Behavioral Military and Family Life Counselor (CYB-MFLC) available to support our military students and families here at CHS. All CYB-MFLCs are Masters or Doctorate-level licensed counselors specializing in child and youth behavioral issues. CYB-MFLCs provide short-term, non-medical counseling support. Services are available at no cost and are private and confidential with the exception of child abuse/neglect, domestic abuse and other duty-to-warn situations. Some issues addressed by CYB-MFLCs include: school adjustment, deployment and separation, reunion adjustment, sibling and parent-child communication, behavioral concerns, and fear, grief and loss. Your MFLC is onsite and available at Coronado High School on Thursdays. Drop by or call (619) 592-0821 for more information.

We are a Kindness Certified school district!  Take the Great Kindness Challenge and devote one week (January 22-26) to performing as many acts of kindness as possible, choosing from a 50 item checklist.  Help us to create a culture of kindness on our campuses! This has the power to increase tolerance, unity, and respect for all students in the Coronado Unified School District.  Go to for more information!
