Islander Family Email 3-21-17

March 21, 2017

Happy Spring, Islander Families!  We hope you enjoy a wonderful break with family next week; school will resume on Monday, April 3.

Our PTO parents are hosting a college information night in the CHS Library on Wednesday at 6:30 PM.  Parents of former CHS students who are currently in college will share lessons learned, and tips for supporting your high school student through the application process and your college student in the dorms, etc. Come ask questions and gain reassurance from those who’ve gone before you!  We appreciate our parent community for seeking new and creative ways to support one another.

As we welcome Spring, a reminder to students of our dress code:

The revised CHS dress code can be found online in our Student Handbook: In a nutshell, students are permitted to wear hats outdoors on campus, and are required to wear straps on their tops and to reasonably cover their backs, sides, midsections, chests, and rear ends.  Clothing or accessories which present a health or safety concern, or which have words or images which may disrupt learning is prohibited.  Our aim is to guide students in recognizing a distinction between “school” and “weekend” attire, and emphasize that students should dress for the “business of school.” Students out of compliance will be informed of the policy and may be asked to change/cover up.

You may have read or heard about the article in our Islander Times newspaper entitled “Cheating Plagues CHS,” based on information gathered from students, teachers, and administrators about recent trends in academic dishonesty on our campus.  The CHS staff and administration continue to discuss ways to set students up for success in demonstrating integrity, while taking both preventive actions and responding appropriately to infractions.  We encourage our students and their families to discuss experiences and exposure to incidences of academic dishonesty as part of an effort to raise awareness and open dialogue.  We appreciate any feedback which helps us strengthen our academic program, student citizenship, and school community.

Last Friday was the end of our midterm grading period, and progress report grades will be posted and mailed out this Friday.  Remember that while these grade reports do affect eligibility for athletics, they are essentially a “snapshot in time,” and you should expect your child’s grades to continue to evolve, even as you receive a mailed copy of midterm grades.  As always, direct questions about your child’s achievement to the appropriate teacher.

Counselors have begun the process of registering students for next year's courses, starting with juniors/incoming seniors.  Please support your student in determining course and elective selections aligned to his/her interests and college/career goals.  Your student will have a set registration appointment with his/her counselor--feel free to contact your child’s counselor directly with any questions or concerns. Please see a link to electives and course descriptions here:

We are excited to announce that certified Tibetan bowl practitioner Diáne Mandle will be attending our school for a presentation and concert. She has developed a healing program for veterans with PTSD and has worked in the medical setting with cancer patients. Her concert is sound immersion with ancient Tibetan bowls, gongs, and percussion to soothe, inspire and awaken the body. The concert is designed to relieve stress.  Music and sound are powerful tools to override pain, stress, illness, altering consciousness and creating a deep sense of peace, wellbeing and better health.

Diáne will be here presenting to our students and staff on April 6th from 3:00 pm-4:30 pm in the CHS theater. She will begin by giving us some information about sound healing and the instruments she uses. Then she will perform for us using various instruments. After the performance there will be time for questions and an opportunity to learn more about Tibetan bowls.  Please RSVP using his link:
