Islander Family Email - 4-21-17

April 21, 2017

Dear Islander Families,

Thank you to our staff, students, and families who assisted us with coverage and communications associated with the traffic challenges created by base closure in the morning on Thursday, April 20.  The cooperation of our school community helped us provide supervision and safe spaces for all students as many Islander students and staff experienced delays.  Thank you!

Next week is our first DE-STRESS Fest at CHS!  In preparation for weeks of AP and state testing, campus and community organizations will host opportunities at break and lunch throughout the week for students to engage in healthy activities and coping strategies as part of our emphasis on life balance and perspective.  We encourage ALL students to come check out our new Mindfulness Space (designed by students!) in the College/Career Center, where opportunities for meditation occur on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings as well as at lunch.

ALL STUDENTS TAKING AP EXAMS must attend our MANDATORY PRE-REGISTRATION MEETING on Wednesday, April 26 in the theatre at 7:30 AM.  Students will fill out forms to save them time and stress on exam days!  Ms. Moore promises to make the process efficient and punctuated with corny jokes.

Next week also features two wonderful community events hosted by our visual arts department:  Ceramics department’s Empty Bowls and the CHS Art Exhibit Opening on Thursday, April 27 at 5 PM.  For $20 you choose a handmade ceramic bowl, fill it with soup donated by a local restaurant, and enjoy bread and water on our CHS quad with all proceeds supporting the hungry.  In our Black Box Theatre that evening opens an incredible display of the talents of our visual artists, with paintings, collages, papercuts, drawings, sculpture, and more that will take your breath away.  On April 27, CHS service and projects-based learning will be celebrated through the talents of our students.  Don’t miss out!  (Please “like” our CHS Facebook page for sneak peeks and photos of campus events! )

PLEASE NOTE:  The week of May 16 we will have an alternative bell schedule to accommodate our CAASPP state testing in Language Arts and Math.  We will have four days of block schedule, M-Th, with a normal school day on Friday (see attached).

Congratulations to our newly elected ASB Executive Commission and Class leaders for next year!
