Islander Family Email: End of Year Edition

Dear Islander Families,

Welcome to the last week of school year 2015-16!  Please read an end-of-year reflection at the end of this email.

We are on a Final Exams schedule this week:

Please join us for our 101st Commencement Ceremony at Niedermeyer Field at 7:30 on Thursday, June 9.  We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our graduates as they join more than a century of Islanders!  Check our website for more information or to view the ceremony streaming live.

Assistant Principal Position:

We are grateful to all who served on our interview panel for assistant principal.  Unfortunately, our top candidate could not accept the position at this time.  We are reposting and look forward to welcoming a new member of the CHS administration later this summer.

Before students leave our campus on Thursday, we have the following reminders:

Lockers:  Students must clean out ALL lockers and cubby spaces—they will be cleared out and items disposed on Friday.
Medications:  Please make arrangements to take your child’s medications home for the summer.
Grades:  Semester grades will be available next week; if you have questions about your student’s grade, please have your child email the teacher first.
Course Registration:  Please confirm with your child that he/she has chosen the correct courses for next year as changes will only be made for reasons of conflict with other courses.  Students enrolled for courses for which they have not met the prerequisite or lack teacher recommendation may be subject to change.

Coronado Schools Foundation and Coronado Arts Education Foundation Contributions to School Year 2016-17:

We are so grateful to the families and community members of Coronado Unified School District for generous contributions to our schools through the Coronado Schools Foundation.  Thanks to the generosity of our shareholders, CSF will fund the following courses on our campus next year:  AP Physics, Engineering, Band, and Visual Art.  The Coronado Arts Education Foundation (formerly CoSA Foundation) will continue its support of CoSA staff and programming.  It simply would not be possible to offer our students the extraordinary enrichment and elective opportunities we host at CHS without your help.  THANK YOU!!!

Year-End Reflection and Looking Forward to Next Year:

We have much to celebrate and appreciate as this school year closes.  Among the accomplishments and events are:

ü  The merging of Palm Academy (alternative learning) and online learning programs with Coronado High School, which opened all courses and extracurricular/athletic opportunities to students in those programs

ü  Introduction of new courses:  AP Physics 2 and online learning options in all the major subject areas

ü  Our ASB’s ongoing dialogue about and evolution of campus traditions and policies, including Homecoming King and Queen elections, ASB and Class Office elections, and Powder Puff events

ü  Our weekly broadcast Islander This Week, and the use of video for smaller-group, all-school “assembly” opportunities

ü  Makeover of our staff lounge and workroom, thanks to the hard work and generosity of our Parent-Teacher Organization

ü  Teacher-centered professional development

ü  Providing a teacher-wide release day to support teacher efficacy

ü  Students and staff collaboration on a powerful Mental Health Awareness video

We have already begun planning for next year, with the following areas of focus in mind:

ü  Supporting smaller class sizes

ü  Adopting and implementing integrated math curriculum and courses

ü  Beginning the process of adopting and implementing Next Generation Science Standards and courses

ü  Increasing support and training for teachers and students in our online learning courses

ü  Continuing to address issues of identity and inclusion at CHS

ü  Providing support for our general education and special education staff collaborating in the co-teach model (and students and parents)

ü  Supporting student-centered instructional strategies and classroom environments

ü  Hosting a driver awareness assembly/experience (thank you, PTO)

ü  Welcoming new staff members in administration, counseling, science, math, special education, and English

ü  Initiating new courses:  Yoga, Home Economics, Creative Writing, Drama, Broadcasting

ü  Supporting long-term substitutes and students in courses with teachers on leave

ü  Expanding internships and work experience opportunities for students

ü  Enriching partnerships with feeder schools in visual and performing arts

ü  Addressing chronic absences

ü  Addressing students who struggle academically and socio-emotionally

As always, our doors are open and we welcome your feedback, thoughts, and ideas in our pursuit of providing our very best for CHS Islanders!

Have a happy, healthy, and enriching summer!
